Ask a Brewer is a new, hopefully regular, feature here at Grubulub. We tried to come up with interesting questions that the brewers might not have been asked before.
Ryan Graham is a brewer at Track 7 in Sacramento. We’ve mentioned Track 7 before on Grubulub, and Ryan’s answers speak to the great community vibe we noticed when we visited. Big thanks to Ryan for playing along!
What’s special about your brewery?
Plays an important social role in our neighborhoods.
What’s your least favorite part of the brew day?
Getting up, but once I am things switch to autopilot.
What is your favorite part of the brew day?
The pint before heading home ๐
What was the biggest mess you’ve made making a beer?
First time we dry-hopped our 60bbl fermenter, we weren’t fast enough. Made a spectacular green geyser.
What’s the largest batch of beer you’ve poured down the drain?
Our first two batches went down the drain. Both were 7bbls but it was pretty crushing to see them go.
What’s your favorite beer festival?
I always have a blast at the SF Beer Week Opening Gala. The Double/Triple IPA competition held by the Bistro is also a ton of fun.
I have shared recipes.
What’s the strangest ingredient you’ve added to a beer?
With our cask program, we add all sorts of odd things. Weirdest cask may have been black garlic, truffle salt saison. I wasn’t a fan and the customers weren’t really either ๐ For a regular release beer, I’m thinking our PB milk Porter is most strange.
What was your happiest moment as a brewer?
Getting the call last year that we won best of show at the CA state fair. It’s not GABF but at least it was validation we are doing something right.
What dumb joke are people always making about your job?
So, are you the janitor too?
What beer should be served at your funeral?
Just one? What are we savages? J/k in all seriousness, if only one I’m going FW Pivo Pils.
